WASHINGTON, July 18, 2013 — Iraq’s newly appointed Ambassador to the United States Lukman Faily today presented his credentials to President Barack Obama in the White House Oval Office.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Lukman Faily is part of a new generation of Iraqis that returned to build a functioning democracy in their homeland. After more than 20 years in the UK working in the Information Technology sector and as a leader in the Iraqi exile community, Mr. Faily returned to Baghdad after the demise of the Saddam regime in 2003 and began his diplomatic career. He has served as an Ambassador at the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and since 2010, as the Iraqi Ambassador to Japan.

“I am honored to have the privilege of serving as my country’s representative here in Washington,” Ambassador Faily said. “Our countries have worked together in the international fight against tyranny and terrorism, and we are grateful for all that the American people have sacrificed for the cause of freedom and democracy in Iraq. I come to this position at a time when my country is facing new challenges, and we see the United States as our natural ally and partner in building our future.”
