The Foreign Ministry appreciates the positions of friendly and brotherly countries, international organisations, as well as the calls and messages that Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein received from his counterparts around the world of condolences to the government and people of Iraq following the terrorist attack that targeted the capital, Baghdad, on 21/1/2021, which left tens of martyrs and wounded.

Minister Fuad Hussein also noted that foreign policy is a reflection of the unity of national decisions and positions, calling for a realistic consideration of the challenges facing the country.

Concerning opportunities, the Foreign Minister stated that the Ministry adopts the principle of balance, multiple partnerships, and openness to all parties within the framework of awareness of the constitution and the laws in force, indicating that the principles of good neighborliness, culture, history and others that are stable in Iraq’s relationship with its neighbors are all subject to dependence in our discourse and our discussions with our neighbours and building on the changes is considered realistic, and advances the executor of foreign policy to adopt national interests and build them.

Another crime is added to the record of terrorism, the one that claimed the lives of dozens of martyrs and injured many other Iraqi citizens.

We condemn the terrorist operation that took place in Baghdad today, Thursday January 21st and affirm that the Iraqi government will take all means to fight the remnants of terrorism, and is determined to continue to complete the war against its groups. We also express our thanks for the international solidarity with the Iraqi people on this sad day.

We pray for the souls of the martyrs whose lives were claimed to grant them mercy and forgiveness, and grant their families patience and solace and for the wounded to recover quickly.

Today, Wednesday, January 20, 2021, the President of the Republic, Dr. Barham Salih, congratulated US President Joe Biden on the occasion of his taking the constitutional oath and assuming his official duties.
President Salih expressed his aspiration to build upon the relationship between the two countries, saying that together Iraq and the USA faced many challenges and had a common interest in confronting these, – “especially those presented by terrorism and extremism,” the President noted.

The Foreign Ministry expresses its surprise on the decision issued by the US Treasury against Mr. Faleh Al-Fayadh head of the Popular Mobilization Commission. We stress that the decision was an unacceptable surprise and point out that the Ministry will carefully follow up with the current and new administration in Washington all decisions issued by the US Treasury Department against Iraqi names and work to address this matter.
